Bruce Jenner wants everybody to call him "Caitlyn" now. And he wants a feminine pronoun to go with it. It appears the official Twitter company policy is to get in line with the social justice dilettantes. In the left hand side of the main Twitter page, under "Trends," is the comment, "Fox News response to Caitlyn Jenner is everything wrong with Fox News."
Seeing editorial opinions in my Twitter Trends is everything wrong with Twitter.
In my opinion, Bruce Jenner is mentally ill. His "issue" appears in the DSM, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. He has what is called Gender Identity Disorder. This is not me being transphobic. This is what is called a psychiatric disorder.
Naturally, anyone with normophobia, or simply isn't normal, doesn't appreciate being thought of as abnormal. That is why Gender Identity Disorder is being replaced in the language by Gender Dysphoria. The definition of disphoria is a profound state of unease or dissatisfaction. The new term is the one being used in the current DSM-V.
Feeling dysphoric? Hey, welcome to the planet! Everybody since fourth grade is in a profound state of unease. Unless they are on drugs. If they are not on drugs, then they must take drugs to feel euphoric. Feeling euphoric is a brand new basic human right.
There are millions of people rushing to follow "Caitlyn" Jenner's Twitter account. Everybody wants to be seen as supportive of Bruce's rights and decisions. I strive merely for tolerance because the rights of the minority should always be protected.
Bruce's behavior is stressing the limits of my tolerance. In my opinion, he is a deranged publicity whore. He is technically what used to be called "transsexual." He wants to dress up like a woman, and be treated like a woman too, so he has had plastic surgery and hormone therapy. He is becoming more feminized.
Good luck finding the old definition of "transsexual" in any online dictionary. That's the problem with Wikipedia and online dictionaries. They can be changed in the middle of the night, to satisfy whatever whim the secretive cabal of editors feel. In this way language is swept aside.
Bruce wants to keep his male anatomy, so that makes him a male. I'm a normative, gender-binary reactionary, so what. What bathroom does he use when he goes to a restaurant? Would Chuck E. Cheese allow him to use the women's restroom?
Countless media articles are appearing, all of which aim to instruct people "how to talk about Caitlyn." One advises that "whenever possible, ask transgender people which pronoun they would like you to use." I have a better idea. Use their name. Resist the urge to use "he" or "she" in conversations with them. It is considered rude to refer to a person as "him" or "her" when they are being reference in conversation.
Another one: "It is never appropriate to put quotation marks around either a transgender person's chosen name or the pronoun that reflects that person's gender identity." Well, "Caitlyn" is a very pretty name. I'm sure "she" will be very happy, as long as the cameras keep rolling. Fuck appropriate.
And yet another: Problematic terms to avoid include "biologically male," and "genetically male." Bruce is, biologically speaking, a male. He has male genes and chromosomes. I know, science is problematic. That's because it's not social science.
Still another: Terms considered defamatory. I believe I am on firm legal ground here, because Bruce is a public figure. Bruce is a tranny, and is practicing an elaborate masquerade, and I wonder if he likes fooling people.
